Thanks to all of our youth and children who participated in this morning's May Crownings in honor of our heavenly mother, the Virgin Mary. Congratulations to Nataly Sanchez-Vega, daughter of Cesar Alberto Sanchez and Angelica Vega, who was baptized this weekend. On Monday, May 12th at 6 P.M. there will be a community wide ecumenical prayer service at the Lamar University Montaigne Center. I plan to participate, and it would be great to see many of you there. From Comeaux Community Funeral Home: Gary Earl Glenn Wright, Jr., was welcomed into the world on May 22, 1999, to his parents, Tanisha Beckett Wright and Gary Earl Glenn Wright, Sr., in Houston, Texas. Gary was known to many as “Moon,” a nickname given to him by his paternal grandfather, Stanley Mickles. Gary departed this world for a far better place on Sunday, April 7, 2024. Gary grew up and was educated in Beaumont. He graduated from Evolution Academy and worked in the construction field. He loved his family and was happiest when he made them laugh and smile. He will be forever remembered by his family who survived him: his parents, Tanisha Wright and Gary Wright, Sr., and Christianna Robertson, the mother of his children. His beautiful children were his pride and joy, Jai Lee, Jai Den, and Jai Calynn. He is also survived by his brothers, Terry Phillips, Jordan Wright, Eric, and Chanion Rawlins, as well as his sister, Jade Wright. Gary’s grandparents are Beverly Wright-Mickles, Elwar and Debra Chillow, Freddy Cain, and Ronald Waters. He is also survived by his great-grandmother, Geraldine Beckett. His many cousins will treasure his memory, especially his special “friend-cousin” Jasmyn Powell, and a host of family and friends. Gary was preceded in death by his cousin, Matthew Beckett, and his grandfathers, William Beckett, Sr., and Stanley Mickles. A homegoing service will be held for Gary on Friday, April 19, 2024, at 1 p.m. at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church, 4445 Avenue A, Beaumont, Texas. Dear Parishioners, The current law of the Catholic Church affirms the ancient pious practice of offering a stipend to have Masses offered for a particular intention or for persons living or dead. For all the Dioceses of the State of Texas, the suggested minimum stipend is five dollars. To accommodate more requests for Masses, priests are allowed to celebrate two Masses each week at which multiple intentions are included. The priest is only allowed to keep one stipend per weekend and the rest of the stipends are given to the diocesan fund to educate seminarians. At our parish, the 10:30 Mass on Sundays and the 6 P.M. Mass on Holydays of Obligation are designated as a “Missa pro Populo” (“Mass for the People”). The Easter Vigil and Christmas Midnight Mass are also delegated as “Mass for the People”. Beginning with the new fiscal year (July 1, 2024), the Sunday Masses of 8 A.M. and Noon will be designated as Masses with collective intentions. (If we have individual intentions scheduled for those Masses already, they will be honored until fulfilled.) Since there will be no limit on the number of intentions, the individual intentions will be listed in the bulletin but not read aloud. The 4:30 P.M. anticipated Mass on Saturday and the weekday Masses will still be available for individual intentions. Dear Parishioners, Thanks to all of you who participated in our second annual Parish Leadership Summit this past Sunday evening. Jesus Abrego of our Diocesan Office of Multicultural Ministry led us in a lively and inspiring bilingual discussion of Bishop Toups' invitation to "Come Back to the Table"; the table of family life (domestic church) and the table of the Holy Eucharist at every Mass. After taking an active part in this discussion, our parish youth accompanied the children to our school building for craft activities. The adults remained in the hall for several presentations on parish ministries. We then held an election to fill four positions on our Parish Pastoral Council. Our thanks to the following members completing their terms; Angel Diamantis, Michael LaBlue, Billy Parsley and John Roberts. Congratulations to the new members; Michael LaBlue (elected to a second term), Mabel Briggs, Carmen Castillo and Esmeralda Ortega Alvarez. The evening concluded with an enjoyable dinner. The summit was a great experience of our unity in diversity. I feel truly blessed to be your pastor and look forward to a great year at Our Lady of the Assumption Parish.
