Today we honor Saint Monica, the faithful mother of Saint Augustine, whose tireless prayers and unwavering hope brought about one of the greatest conversions in Church history. Born in North Africa in the 4th century, Monica was married to a pagan named Patricius, who had a difficult temper. Through patience, charity, and perseverance, she brought both her husband and mother-in-law to the Catholic Faith. Yet her greatest trial was her son, Augustine, who strayed far from God in his youth, chasing worldly pleasures and false philosophies. For years, Monica prayed with tears for Augustine’s conversion, never losing faith that God’s mercy would reach him. Her prayers were answered when Augustine encountered Saint Ambrose in Milan, was baptized, and went on to become one of the greatest saints and Doctors of the Church. Saint Monica is a powerful model of persistent prayer, trust in God’s timing, and hope for all mothers who pray for their children. She reminds us that no soul is beyond the reach of God’s grace. “Nothing is far from God.” —Saint Monica Patroness of mothers, wives, and those who pray for wayward children. Saint Monica, pray for us!
Welcome to the month of the Immaculate Heart of Mary! We call her heart "immaculate" because her will was always in conformity to God's Will as a consequence of being perpetually full of grace. This fullness of grace kept her free from all stains of original sin and concupiscence, allowing her to be worthy of being the Mother of God. Venerable Sr. Lúcia dos Santos, the oldest of the visionaries of Fatima, received visions from Our Blessed Mother who asked for the practice of the Five First Saturdays devotion to help make amends for the offenses committed by the ingratitudeof men. On October 31, 1942, Pope Pius XII made a solemn Act of Consecration of the Church and the whole world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Let us learn and remember to practice this beautiful devotion especially during this month of August. We need it more than ever during this time of many disordered beliefs. Faith and Family in Basking Ridge is proud to highlight stories of our faith and community every month. Do you have a particular favorite section in the magazine that you would like to share? Please let me know. We would love to hear it. Enjoy reading the faith-filled story of the Coughlin family. There is a lot to glean on their unwavering faith in the midst of a storm. Today the Church honors Pope St. Pius X (1835-1914), a holy shepherd whose motto was “Instaurare omnia in Christo”— “To restore all things in Christ.” Born in Giuseppe Sarto in Italy, he came from humble beginnings yet rose to becoming the 257th Pope. Known for his deep humility, pastoral heart, and love of the poor, Pius X worked tirelessly to renew the life of the Church. Some of his most lasting contributions include: 1) Encouraging frequent reception of Holy Communion and lowering the age of First Communion so that children could receive Our Lord sooner. 2) Promoting Sacred Scripture and the Catechism to deepens faith month the laity. 3) Supporting the renewal of sacred music, especially Gregorian chant. 4) Defending the Church against modern errors, always keeping the faith of Christ at the center. Pius X passed away in 1914, just as World War I began, and was canonized in 1954. His life is a reminder that true reform in the Church begins with holiness, love for the Eucharist, and fidelity to Christ. Pope St. Pius X, pray for us!
